What you should know about SAFE's New Visa® Chip-Enabled Debit Cards
SAFE Federal Credit Union has converted all magnetic stripe debit cards to chip-enabled debit cards. These debit cards offer enhanced chip technology that is globally accepted and nearly impossible for fraudsters to counterfiet. Here's what you should know.
Your new debit card will include the latest chip technology, which provides an added layer of security and greater protection against fraud. When you use your debit card at a chip-activated terminal, the embedded chip generates a one-time use code. While this feature will offer added security, it will not prevent all types of fraud. We advise you to always monitor your account for any suspicious activity. Should you experience fraud on your account, contact the credit union immediately.
HOW to use a chip-enabled card
- If the merchant terminal is chip-enabled, look for the slot on the bottom-front of the terminal and insert your debit card face up with the chip first.
- Leave your debit card in the terminal until the transaction is complete.
- The terminal will prompt you to sign or enter your PIN.
- Take your debit card when prompted and don't leave it behind.
- Should the merchant terminal not be equipped with a chip reader or if the reader is not activated, you should proceed by swiping the debit card to complete the purchase.
Once you have received a new chip-enabled debit card in the mail, please activate your new card by calling 1-866-840-3794. Once your new debit card is activated, you can then destroy your old debit card. Please keep in mind, your old debit card will be deactivated approximately 10 days after issuance of your new card. Your PIN number should arrive in a separate mailer 2-3 days after you receive your new debit card in the mail. If you have any automatic payments such as utility bills, gym memberships, insurances, etc., you will need to notify the merchant of your new debit card number and expiration date.
Instant Issuance of chip-enabled debit cards in our branches will not be available in the initial stages of card replacement. Please know that we are diligently working to complete the enhancements to the instant issue card machines, and hope to have these machines fully functional with the ability to issue chip-enabled cards in branch as soon as possible. If your chip-enabled debit card is lost or stolen while instant issue is not available, you will need to order a replacement debit card, which will arrive in the mail in 7-10 business days. We will no longer instant issue magnetic stripe debit cards effective October 1, 2018. While we are attempting to make this process as easy as possible for our members, your patience during this conversion is most appreciated.
