A History of Serving Our Members
Wednesday, May 15, 2019
In 1955 fifteen civilian employees from Shaw Air Force Base had a vision for a credit union that would serve military members and their families on the base. So, they gathered what cash they had and started Shaw Air Force Employee Federal Credit Union. Today the credit union is known as SAFE and it serves both military and civilians in several South Carolina counties in addition to the base, but it's maintained the vision of the original founders.
Put people over profits
Our founders had dealt with big, for-profit banks before. They wanted to start a credit union because of the non-profit model that can give members higher dividends on savings, lower interest rates on loans, and fewer fees than a for-profit model could.
Ethical business practices
Starting a credit union meant putting members first, that's why our founders ensured that we're transparent and professional in all our interactions. We still honor those ideas today.
Participate in meaningful community engagement
Our founders were surrounded by people who served every day. When they created SAFE they took that service mentality and infused it in our culture. Today we regularly participate in events like food drives, employee volunteer projects, and other charitable events.
Today we serve Shaw and seven surrounding counties, but we're always looking out for our men and women serving. We created a special suite of services and benefits just for active-duty military members and their families.
Making sure you're financially healthy
According to Militarysaves.org, savers with a plan are twice as likely to save successfully for things like retirement. But it can be hard for military members to come up with a plan when they're already planning for things like PSC, deployments, and everything else that comes with military life. We combat that by offering personalized financial advisement to our military members. It's our way of helping them come up with a plan so that they can focus on their work and family.
Education doesn't stop at the financial advising session—we also participate in Military Saves Week, a national event to share resources, host events, and educate our military members on financial wellness.
In addition to helping you create a plan, we offer our military members flexible terms for loan repayment and preferred rate emergency loans.
With You Around the World
It's true that SAFE is a local credit union, but that doesn't mean our members lose our support when they're out of the country. We offer our military members personal support both at home and while they're abroad.
