How to avoid ATM fees when traveling

You’re out running errands, heading to a game, or traveling for the weekend when you realize you need cash. The nearest SAFE ATM may be miles away, but you still have options.

SAFE is part of the CO-OP ATM network, which connects participating credit unions so you can use a much larger group of ATMs all across the US. It gives you more places to get cash without having to track down a SAFE ATM to avoid paying a surcharge fee.

With a checking account from SAFE, you have access to more than 30,000 surcharge-free ATMs in the network. That means you can withdraw cash at a participating ATM without paying an ATM surcharge, even when you’re away from home. Those fees may seem small, but they can add up! The good news is...fees are easy to avoid when you're a SAFE checking member and you know where to look.

You won’t pay an ATM operator surcharge when you withdraw cash at a participating CO-OP network ATM.

Use the ATM locator on our website⁠ before you withdraw. Look for a participating network ATM near your destination or along your route.

Can I use the network when I’m traveling?

Yes. Your SAFE checking account gives you access to more than 30,000 surcharge-free ATMs, making it easier to get cash when you’re away from your usual SAFE location.

What if I use an ATM outside the network?

That ATM may charge a surcharge. Check the fee shown on the screen before you complete your withdrawal.
