Trick or treat? How to spot a good deal from a bad one

Woman shopping in the fall seasonal aisle

Halloween is all about tricks and treats, but when it comes to shopping, nobody wants to be tricked into spending more than they should. Sure...that sales rack and the red "50% off" sticker look convincing, but retailers can be masterminds at making us feel like we’re getting a bargain even when we’re not. With Black Friday and the holiday shopping season right around the corner, now is a great time to learn how to separate the real deals from the tricks.

Don’t Fall for the Big Red Sale Sign
Just because something is marked down doesn’t mean you’re getting the best price. Some retailers raise prices before a big sale, making the discount look more impressive than it really is. Before you buy, take a minute to compare prices at a few different stores. You might be surprised to find that the “biggest sale of the year” isn’t much of a sale at all.

Beware of the Countdown Clock
“Only 2 hours left!” “Almost sold out!” “Last chance!” Sound familiar? These messages are designed to create urgency and get you to make a decision before you’ve had time to think it through. Sometimes those deadlines are legitimate, but other times they’re just marketing tactics. If you weren’t planning to buy something before you saw the countdown, ask yourself whether you really need it.

A Deal Isn’t a Deal If You Didn’t Need It
This one’s easy to forget. Saving $40 on something you weren’t planning to buy isn’t necessarily saving money. You're still spending money! Before clicking “Add to Cart,” ask yourself a simple question: Would I still want this if it weren’t on sale? If the answer is no, you might be better off keeping that money in your pocket.

Watch Out for the Hidden Costs
Free shipping sounds great, until you realize you have to spend another $30 to qualify. And don’t forget about shipping fees, service charges, and those tempting little extras at checkout. Pay attention to the final total, not just the advertised price. That’s what really matters.

Shop Smart, Not Scared

You don’t have to avoid sales or skip the fun of holiday shopping. Just go into it with a plan. Make a list, set a spending limit, and give yourself permission to walk away from a deal that doesn’t make sense. And remember, the best bargain isn’t always the one with the biggest discount. It’s the one that fits your needs and your budget.
